Did you know that knowledge is the best coping mechanism? Aside from the fact that it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle it is equally important that we have enough knowledge about our body, what the risk factors are that may cause our body to get sick, and what possible treatments, like kidney cancer treatment, are available to manage the disease. Knowing how to deal with a situation beforehand makes us able to adjust with the situation well.
The kidneys and its function
In very simple terms one main responsibility of the kidneys is to remove body waste in the form of urine. Moreover these two organs, located in the lower part of the abdomen and with the spine in between, also help in the production of red blood cells and control blood pressure. The kidneys are vital organs and are pretty sturdy. However, some risk factors have been known to weaken the kidneys giving way to diseases. Sometimes the disease will escalate to cancer and kidney cancer treatment is immediately needed.
What causes kidney cancer and its symptoms?
The only thing sure about cancer is that it is not transmittable. In other words, no one can get cancer from someone who has cancer. Risk factors like age, smoking, excessive drinking, and obesity are among the main reasons why people get, among others, kidney cancer.
There are different types of kidney cancer like, renal cell cancer, transitional cell carcinoma, and also Wills tumor. Symptoms are an abnormal lump or mass, blood in the urine, chronic pain felt in just one side of the body, and tiredness.
There are lots of different ways or methods for the treatment of kidney cancer, these are:
- Radical nephrectomy – a surgical procedure where the entire kidney is taken out and may include the adrenal gland, some tissue around the kidney, and some lymph nodes.
- Simple nephrectomy – usually for people with stage one kidney cancer. This is where the surgeon removes only the kidney.
- Partial nephrectomy – this surgical procedure is done when either the two kidney organs have been affected by cancer or one kidney has been removed and the second is now developing a tumor. Patients with a tumor that isles then 4cm may also undergo this type of surgical procedure.
- Biopsy.
- Aerial embolization – a kind of local therapy where the tumor is shrunk and used when an operation is not feasible.
- Radiation treatment or radiotherapy – another type of local therapy but this time uses radiation or high energy rays to kill the cancer cells.
- Biological therapy – a general type of kidney cancer treatment using medication to enhance the production of interpheron alpha or IL 2. Under normal circumstances the body already produces these elements to fight diseases. The doctor will have to prescribe this medication to supplement what the body only produces in small amounts.
- Chemotherapy – another type of general treatment that uses chemical substances flowing directly in the bloodstream to treat kidney cancer.
The doctor will thoroughly discuss with the patient whatever type of kidney cancer treatment they will undertake. Armed with this knowledge, the patient and the family are then better equipped in dealing and coping with the situation.
